As the newest honorary members of the San Benito CISD Police Department, San Benito High School students Roland Scott Aguirre and Alexis A. Ibarra, take great pride in displaying their badges, their caps and appreciation plaques.
They have officially named honorary police officers by San Benito CISD Police Department personnel because of their positive outlook.
Security officer David Cavazos suggested the idea of recognizing these students for their positive disposition. The department had previously held similar ceremonies to recognize students.
Police Sgt. Norma Martinez said that recognizing the students is important.
“We always interact with students every single day. If there is ever a situation, they will always know that they can come to us for help,” she said. “Keeping that rapport and communication with the students is very important to us.”
San Benito CISD Canine Handler/Police Officer Adrian Gonzalez said that students know that officers are there to help keep them safe.
“They are good kids. This is a memory for them that they are going to remember in their life,” Gonzalez said. “It’s something great for all of us. It shows another side of the police department. We are showing them that we do have a heart and that we are here to help them.”
Scott’s mother, Rebecca Aguirre, was overjoyed with emotion.
“It’s just awesome. It influences people out there that see that our students are blessed and can bring a positive outlook to life for the rest of the population,” she said.
Speaking of how proud she is of her son, Aguirre said, “He’s well loved. He’s popular. Scotty’s always been a blessing and I’ll never see it any other way.”
Her son thoroughly enjoyed the event, giving it a thumbs up and a high five gesture in approval.
Alexis’ mother, Rosie Armas, expressed her appreciation.
“It was very special. I wasn’t expecting it. I’m happy because I am very proud of him. He’s accomplished a lot,” she said.
