San Benito CISD students have been busy collecting canned good donations to help those in need as the holiday season nears.

At La Encantada Elementary, siblings Destiny Elorza, Eli Elorza, and Oralia Elorza, with the help of their parents, donated 800 cans of soup to benefit the local food pantry. The school treated students to a show with a special performance by Magician Oscar Muñoz with free entry to the show with a donation of canned goods.

At the secondary level, over 60 San Benito Naval Junior Reserve Officer’s Training Corps (NJROTC) Cadets from the San Benito High School and Veterans Memorial Academy launched their Community Service project in the Treasure Hills area, collecting canned food items and cash donations for the local food pantries.

Cadet/Commander Cristian Cano, the unit’s Commanding Officer, said, “We know that the Food Pantries typically need to restock their shelves during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season, so we make it a point each year to help in those efforts.”

Besides helping families during the holiday season, the project also assists cadets accumulate required community service hours.

“We know that our work helps feed many needy families during these two important holiday periods and it makes us feel good that we are able to help out,” Cano said. “The event also benefits the cadets required to complete some of their community service hours for local NJROTC awards and towards meeting their Community Service requirements for college entrance.”

The cadets collected over 700 canned food items and over $250 in cash donations. The items have been delivered to the local area food pantries. NJROTC would like to thank the Treasure Hills area residents and community members for their continued support and generosity.

The NJROTC cadets are under the direction of Lt. Rolando Gonzalez, Chief Timothy Wilson and Chief Jesus Gaytan.
