The San Benito CISD Board of Trustees named Dr. Adrian Vega, Deputy Superintendent for Teaching and Learning with the Tucson Unified School District in Tucson, Arizona, as the district’s lone finalist during a special board meeting held on Wednesday, November 4.
Dr. Vega has served as the Deputy Superintendent for Teaching and Learning since July 2013. With an annual budget of $530 million, the Tucson Unified School District is the second largest school district in the state of Arizona. The district has a total of 89 schools, 49,000 students and 7,000 employees.
Although Dr. Vega has been in Arizona since 2013, he also has experience working as an educator in the state of Texas, including experience as a high school principal with the Ector County Independent School District and as a middle school principal with the Tyler Independent School District.
He has also worked with the Dallas Independent School District, serving as a Superintendent Intern and as a Novice and Aspiring Principals Specialist with the Professional Development Department.
He’s held other positions with Dallas ISD, including the following: Instructional Specialist with the Alternative Certification Department, elementary assistant principal, elementary school Community Liaison and elementary bilingual teacher.
Dr. Vega said he is looking forward to working with school leaders, students and staff.
“I’m super excited. It’s evident that the board is completely dedicated and committed to doing the absolute best. I’m looking forward to working with the board,” he said.
He also offered praise for the staff members in the district.
“The employees are highly committed to providing the best for the students. I am looking forward to working elbow to elbow with all educators and staff in the district,” Dr. Vega said.
The San Benito CISD Board of Trustees concluded the initial screening interviews of candidates for the SBCISD school superintendent position.
Members of the school board interviewed six candidates during closed session on Saturday, October 31. After much discussion, the SBCISD school board was able narrow the field of candidates to three semifinalist candidates.
“The interviews were enlightening and informative, and the school board was extremely pleased to interview highly qualified candidates,” said Anna Cruz, SBCISD School Board President, adding that the process of narrowing down the field of candidates proved difficult.
Cruz expressed her appreciation for the dedicated work of all members of the school board. The school board previously participated in a workshop on the legal guidelines for conducting interviews and also spent time reviewing over 35 applications for the top position.
“The selection of a new superintendent is a labor intensive process. During this time, the school board was focused on finding a leader who had the qualities, knowledge and skills to ensure success for all students in our district,” Cruz said.
In Texas, candidates for a school superintendent position must wait 21 days after they are named a lone finalist before they can sign a contract.
