The San Benito CISD After School Program, in partnership with Lyford CISD, was recently awarded an Afterschool Centers on Education (ACE) Cycle 9 grant from the Texas Education Agency (TEA).
The fist year of the Cycle 9 grant provides $1.7 million for 10 schools – three in Lyford and seven in San Benito. The three-year grant calls for reductions in the second and third year funding.
The local grant program – “CAPS” (Committed to Advancing Parents and Students) – is designed to extend learning opportunities outside of the regular school day. The program’s enrichment activities complement regular school day academic programs and help improve educational outcomes such as academic performance, attendance, positive behavior, grade promotion, and graduation rates.
“I am personally proud and humbled to be a part of such an amazing program. There are many people who have worked hard to advance after school programming over the years. The San Benito school district’s After School Program is excited to begin its 18th year as a respected and model program in Texas,” proudly explains Jack Garcia, SBCISD After School Program Director.
“Our After School Program continues to be a much needed resource for the students and parents of our respected communities,” he added.
The SBCISD After School Program now has 19 after school sites, with 16 being funded through grant monies.
The Cycle 9 grant will provide services for students from the following San Benito campuses: Frank Roberts Elementary, Landrum Elementary, La Encantada Elementary, Berta Cabaza Middle School, Miller Jordan Middle School, San Benito Riverside Middle School, and San Benito Veterans Memorial Academy. Services will continue at San Benito High School, Joe Callandret Positive Redirection Center, Dr. Raul Garza Jr. Elementary, Judge Oscar De La Fuente Elementary, Angela G. Leal Elementary, Dr. C.M. Cash Elementary, Ed Downs Elementary, Sullivan Elementary, and the Amador R. Rodriguez Juvenile Boot Camp and Educational Center through the TEA Cycle 8 Grant (“Excel U”).
The After School Program will also provide services through the following Project Learning sites: La Paloma Elementary, Rangerville Elementary, and Fred Booth Elementary.
Programming will begin at grant sites on Monday, August 29, and at Project Learning sites on Monday, September 12.
