San Benito celebrates Texas’ public schools

Committed to laying the foundation for a solid education for its students, San Benito CISD recently commemorated this year’s Celebrate Texas Public Schools (CTPS) campaign.

The 2015 theme for the CTPS campaign, also known as Texas Public Schools Week, was “… it matters!” and focused on recognizing, honoring, and celebrating all that is excellent in public education.

In 1950, the Masonic Lodges of Texas established the campaign that publicly recognizes contributions made by the state’s free system of education. Today, the Texas School Public Relations Association continues the tradition as a meaningful way of showcasing the many educational opportunities given to more than five million students attending Texas’ 1,200-plus school districts.

San Benito CISD prides itself in offering progressive, innovative courses and programs to just less than 11,000 students, the leaders of tomorrow.

Providing students with top-notched academic programs, a wide array of extracurricular activities and state-of-the-art technology, the school district not only helps students achieve academic excellence but also prepares them for the challenge of becoming lifelong learners.

As part of the week long celebration, San Benito schools also opened their doors and invited parents and members of the community to visit classrooms, participate in open house events, and take a first-hand look at the extraordinary and creative teaching and high level of learning that take place in our classrooms.

“Open House showcases our public education system, including our parental participation, positive school community relations, and our successes across Texas campuses,” proudly affirms Elsa Lambert, Principal of Dr. Raul Garza, Jr. Elementary.

Throughout the district, campuses scheduled activities that promoted positive self-esteem, encouraged parental participation, and brought awareness to public education.

From studying Texas History and promoting literacy and physical fitness to fostering quality time between students and their parents and grandparents, local students and campus personnel enjoyed the special celebration in creative and unique ways.

Educators and students also dressed up for career day, wore their favorite college shirts, flew kites, and participated in family picnics during lunchtime.

“It is a great time to celebrate our children, their parents, and our teachers as we continue to move forward in our state and promoting excellence in our public schools,” added Lambert.

Open house festivities afforded parents, grandparents, and community members the opportunity to witness that, each day, our students acquire new skills and learn new information, engaging their minds and bodies and building their educational foundations and futures.

Students selected as Texas All-State Musicians

Reed Smetter, Gabby Beltran, Alberto Martinez and Camille Cordova, members of San Benito High School’s Mighty Greyhound Band, recently performed with the prestigious Texas All-State Bands in San Antonio at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center as part of the 2015 Texas Music Educators Association Clinic/Convention.

“These four outstanding musicians were chosen for this prestigious honor through a competitive process held this year across the state at district, region and area levels,” said Director of Bands Marc A. Perea, a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, an organization with over 11,000 members headquartered in Austin.

High school students selected to perform in the All-State concerts have competed through several levels of auditions, beginning in the fall of 2014 to qualify at the state level. All-State is the highest honor a Texas music student can receive.

Over 1,600 students are selected through a process that begins with over 60,000 students from around the state vying for this honor to perform in one of 15 ensembles such as bands, orchestras and choirs.

“I would like to extend a special thank you to the band directors and parents that made this possible,” Perea said. “Congratulations to these outstanding musicians for representing San Benito CISD in one of the nation’s most prestigious music platforms for high school students to perform in. We are extremely proud of their accomplishments!”

Parker Longoria, a trumpet player, was chosen to represent San Benito in the TMEA Region 28 Jazz Band.

“A special congratulations goes out to Parker for making the Valley’s top high school Jazz ensemble,” Perea said. “Parker was selected as one of only ten trumpet players from the Valley to be in this ensemble. Parker also made the TMEA All-Area Jazz Band where only three trumpet players from South Texas are chosen.”

Texas Music Educators Association sponsors the Texas All-State competition. This competitive process begins throughout the state in auditions hosted by 28 TMEA Regions. Individual musicians perform selected music for a panel of judges who rank each instrument or voice part. From this ranking, a select group of musicians advances from their region to compete against musicians from other areas in seven TMEA Area competitions.

The highest-ranking musicians judged at the TMEA Area competitions qualify to perform in a TMEA All-State music group. Only the top three percent of musicians who initially audition become All-State musicians.

These All-State students participate in three days of rehearsals directed by nationally-recognized conductors during the TMEA Clinic/Convention. Their performances for thousands of attendees bring this extraordinary event to a close.

Target Corporation awards grant to Frank Roberts Elementary

Frank Roberts Elementary kindergarten students took part in a grand tour of the San Benito community thanks to a Target Corporation $700 grant.

Teacher Patricia Avila explained that the students gained valuable experience while enhancing what they are learning in class.

“This educational field trip gave the students an opportunity to learn first hand about our community history through pictures, visual resources and oral presentations,” said Avila. “The students were able to communicate with our community leaders and grasp a better understanding of what they have been learning in class.”

Avila said the trip proved beneficial by helping students acquire useful information.

“When the students went to the Fire Station, the firefighters gave them a great presentation about fire safety and how they can help others when they are in danger,” Avila explained.

The students also visited the Museums of San Benito that consist of The San Benito History Museum, the Texas Conjunto Hall of Fame and Museum and the Freddy Fender Museum.

“When the students went to the San Benito Museums, they were given three presentations by the volunteers. The volunteers shared with them vital information about the city of San Benito’s past, present and future, such as the future site of the new museum.”

Avila plans to apply for the grant next year.

“It is important to give the students an opportunity to see and visit places within the Valley. When we take students on field trips, they gain prior knowledge and learn things that they will internalize, forever, ” she said. “I believe field trips can be an educational and memorable event for every child.”

Besides visiting the museum, the students heard a presentation by the members of the school district’s Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps during a special ceremony at the San Benito Veterans War Memorial. The students also visited other points of attraction throughout the city, including city hall, where they had lunch with Mayor Celeste Sanchez and enjoyed having her read a story to them. The group also enjoyed baked goods courtesy of La Especial Bakery.

Greyhound Corner Embroidery and Gift Shop helps students gain valuable skills

The Greyhound Corner Embroidery and Gift Shop at San Benito High School teaches Lifeskills students business opportunities with hopes of helping them find jobs in the business world when they leave high school.

Juan Lopez, an assistant principal at San Benito High School, explains that Business Venture teacher Gladys Miñana works closely with 14 Lifeskills students in grades 10-12 assisting them in acquiring skills related to the store’s day-to-day operations. She also trains them on securing various business skills ranging from operating a cash register, to research to delivery of goods.

The learning doesn’t end there as the students learn embroidery skills and the value of customer service. They also work closely with the readily available technology and conduct research as part of their daily operations inside the store, located in Room D-3.

The students enhance their customer service skills while developing a sense of accomplishment when they finish their projects, Miñana explained.

“They feel successful. You can see it in their faces,” she said, adding that the students prepare the merchandise and call the clients to make arrangements to deliver the items.

“This program provides the district’s Special needs students the opportunity to learn business skills that will transition into the workforce,” she explained.

Students have such a pleasant experience while working at the store, where they learn how to count, fold, hang, sort, organize and store merchandise.

“Once the embroidery is finished, my students trim the backing and excess threads from the garments,” she said. “Besides learning those skills, students also learn how to open a bank account, make deposits and write checks. They also record transactions and balance a checkbook.”

The program began during the 2014-2015 school year and the students have not only been able to gain valuable skills, they also take pride in learning about the importance of teamwork and harmony in the work place.

“Laughter, smiles and a positive working environment are what you will find at the Greyhound Corner Embroidery and Gift Shop,” Miñana said. “My students’ enthusiasm and passion for their tasks of the day is evident on their happy faces.”

The students look forward to learning new skills and helping each other out.

“They help their fellow classmates with their tasks if they see that they are struggling and they enjoy singing while they work on their projects,” she said.

All of the students take pride in their work and are recognized for their efforts and contributions, she said.

“My hard working students take pleasure in working and trying their best. They are rewarded with being named “Employee of the Week” and a sign is not only posted outside the store, but also on the television screens in the main hallway,” Miñana said.

For more information about the program, please call 361-2860.

The San Benito Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) celebrated the nation’s military history, excellence and tradition during the unit’s 15th Annual Military Ball at the Rancho Viejo Country Club in Olmito, Texas.

With a sold out event of over 150 cadets and guests, the unit gathered for a gala event – “A Night at the Theatre” – marked with time-honored military courtesies and customs.

With male cadets in their NJROTC dress blue uniforms and the females in beautiful and elegant dresses, each guest was formally announced as they made their way through the Unit’s Honor Guard (Saber Guard) and toward the receiving line that included City of San Benito Mayor Celeste Z. Sánchez and her guest, former San Benito High School Principal Delia Weaver; former Superintendent of Schools and Antonio G. Limón and his wife, Linda Marie Limón, and their daughter, Alexa; SBHS Assistant Principal Joann Fernandez and her guest, Sandra Ruiz; Veterans Memorial Academy Assistant Principal Juan Manuel Gonzales; Emiko Wilson and Marisol Peña.

The Battalion’s Commanding Officer, Cadet Commander Cristian Cano, provided opening remarks and welcomed everyone on behalf of San Benito NJROTC instructors Lieutenant Rolando Gonzalez, Chief Jesus Gaytan and Chief Timothy Wilson. The Liberty Hound Color Guard presented the Colors as Cadet Giselle Alegria sang the National Anthem. Cano continued the program by acknowledging the service and dedication provided by our Soldiers, Marines, Sailors, Airmen and Coast Guardsmen.

Cadet Clarence Ebarb and Cadet Kayttie Lambert then spoke about Prisoners of War and those Missing in Action. San Benito High School band member Boris Esparza played “Taps” on his trumpet in solemn tribute to POWs/MIAs and those having paid the ultimate sacrifice defending our freedoms.

Cadet Giselle Alegria led the cake cutting ceremony as she announced the Youngest Cadet, Francisco Fuentes, and the Oldest Cadet, Daniella Alaniz, who had the honor of cutting the ceremonial cake.

During the formal dinner, cadets used the etiquette skills acquired from classroom lessons on the proper use of knives and forks, etc.

After dinner, the Battalion’s Executive Officer, Cadet Lieutenant Commander Daniella Alaniz, continued with the official coronation of the Royal Court. The 2015 Royal Court included the following: Lord Jesus Ayala and Lady Bethany Cruz, Freshman Class; Duke Jose Jimenez and Duchess Deysy Salinas, Sophomore Class; Prince Miguel Gonzales and Princess Giselle Alegria, Junior Class; and King Cristian Cano and Queen Kayttie Lambert, Senior Class.

Cadet Alaniz concluded the ceremony with closing remarks by thanking everybody for attending the evening, acknowledging the awesome support that NJROTC receives from administrators and teachers throughout the school year. Alaniz also thanked the unit’s decorating committee for an outstanding job.

Finally, Alaniz called all cadets to the dance floor to begin the dancing. The cadets danced for the remainder of the evening, leaving just before midnight to ensure that their carriages did not turn into pumpkins. As the cadets were leaving at the end of the evening, many remarked that they were already looking forward to attending next year’s Military Ball.
